Anco Peeters - Trusting the machine? AI-assisted decision making in healthcare

Artificially intelligent (AI) technologies are increasingly prevalent in healthcare. AI assists in making decisions on how to, for instance, communicate with patients or make medical diagnoses. Recently, a new type of AI, Large Language Models, like ChatGPT, have made their way into medical AI as well. But to what extent do we want medical professionals to depend on such AI tools when making expert decisions? This talk will engage with this and related questions on the risks, challenges and ethics of AI in healthcare.

Anco Peeters is lecturer at the Department of Artificial Intelligence and researcher at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition, and Behaviour. His current research focuses on the question "How can we flourish with generative AI?" Previously, he worked on the ethics of social robots and embodied cognition.

Maarten Steinbuch – Are robots our friends?

The exponential rate of change of computing power enables accelerating developments in sensor technology, AI computing and in robotics and mobility. Cars will become like an iPad on wheels. We are world champion with our soccer playing robots and our surgical robots could outperform humans. Are we able to cope with the potential of innovations? Can we accelerate? And how does the future of universities look like?

Maarten Steinbuch is a high-tech systems scientist, entrepreneur and communicator. He holds the chair of Systems & Control at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), where he is Distinguished University Professor. He is also Scientific Director of Eindhoven Engine. The research of his group spans from automotive engineering to mechatronics, motion control, and fusion plasma control. He is most known for his work in the field of advanced motion control and mechatronics, as well as in surgical robotics. Steinbuch is a prolific blogger and a key opinion leader on the influence of new technologies on society. He is (co)-founder of 8 start-ups, of which three on surgical robotics.

This keynote will address publication fraud in different research fields, how this impacts on the scientific process and the perspective of the general public on science. But also what can and should be done to reduce the amount of fraudulent research output.

Dr. van der Heyden is associate professor in the department of Medical Physiology at the University Medical Center Utrecht, The Netherlands. His research focusses on cardiac potassium ion channel pharmacology and ion channel trafficking related to cardiac arrhythmias. 
He writes on scientific integrity and is member of several advisory panels on this subject. He is consulting editor Scientific Integrity for the British Journal of Pharmacology. He coordinates the mandatory PhD course Responsible Conduct of Research at the Graduate School of Life Sciences in Utrecht, and provides similar PhD courses at the University of Vienna, Austria.
